What Is Onyx?
Onyx is a perfectly imperfect oxide mineral; it’s a cryptocryalline calcite much like Agate and differs only by its parallel bands. The colors of Onyx are from white to anything imaginable, most pieces have parallel bands or veining some with different colors.Probably the best property of Onyx is its translucencies and the stunning effects it gives when backlit.
Onyx comes in rocks the size of pickup trucks and its cut to more manageable sized pieces with a large saw. From there the smaller pieces are shaped into anything from soap dishes and bowls to sheets of stone used in table tops and wall coverings. The colors and veining are pronounced by backlighting.
Most of our Onyx Lamps have some degree of veining. Veins are the long meandering lines of color that traverse the natural stone. They are caused by water carrying minerals of different colors into cracks or voids with high pressure. The way the onyx is cut can affect the veining patterns creating parallel lines and sometime swirl like patterns.
COLOR VARIATIONS There are 5 main color variations available and take note that with all the different colours and types of lights on the market today a lot of variation can be achieved by changing light bulbs. In all the lamps I have there are no two lamps that are Identical and this makes the colour labelling difficult and sometimes a little inaccurate. Many lamps are multi coloured with as many as 5 or 6 different colours on one side. when describing things created by nature that is often how they are. This holds especially true for Onyx Stone.

The gems form from iron, carbon and oxygen inside rock.Formed hydrothermally inside a rock. It has been extracted since antiquity and used as a decorative stone in armor and rituals. The stone is not only beautiful but is believed to have healing properties that affect the person wearing it or holding it in her hand.
